Turning wooden writing pens on a lathe is a quick and easy project that even the novice can master with a little practice. As you perfect your turning skills, you may want to vary the designs of each pen. One pen can easily be turned, finish applied, and assembled in less than an hour. These pens can be made from beautiful, exotic woods that are perfect gifts for birthdays, Christmas, or any other special occasion.

Pen, The Russ Line

This pen is similar to the Slim-Line, with the only difference being that we are not using the center band from the parts kit.

Pen, Making A
This presentation is built around a detailed description of turning, sanding, finishing and assembly of the basic “Slimline” pen from the parts kit. Because it is known by different names by different suppliers, I use “Slim-Line” to include all of them.

Pen Upgrade, BIC®
I use a Nova chuck with the small (25 mm) jaws and grip the piece of wood (about 1/2” square) firmly, but aligned so that the tailcenter is at about center of the other end. I clamp down tight and screw in the tail center to support it properly.
