Stairway, Deck Porch Ron’s first HouseCall this week was in West Dennis, Massachusetts where Len and Suzanne Mediaville built their beautiful Cape Cod home over ten years ago. Steps, Porch - Build Closed-Riser Level of difficulty: Advanced - Steps can be almost as simple as buying precut stringers, attaching them to the porch with metal hangers and nailing on treads but that’s what they look like. That may be okay for the back porch, but this stair has the details that make it more suitable for your front entry deck or porch - more formal and stronger closed-risers that are mitered with the stringers, invisible attachment to the porch, and skirting below the stringers.

Sewing steps provide a foot-rest for someone sewing by hand in a seated position. It’s also an easy project that uses less than 2 board feet of hardwood.

Stairway, Deck - with Landings Designing and building a stairway with a landing can be one of the most challenging elements of a deck project. Precision is crucial, since building codes have very exact standards for stairway construction. To ensure that the steps for both the top and bottom staircases have the same vertical rise and tread depth, the landing must be set at the right position and height.
