6-step Router Plate Installationshopnote-router-plate (PDF) The biggest challenge to making any router tabletop is cutting an opening for the insert plate so that it fits perfectly. To answer that challenge when it came to building the ultimate router table, I used a foolproof method that does not require any tedious measuring or layout. Just a few common shop tools. The nice thing about this method is you can use it to create an opening for any size or type of plate. This supplementary article is available to download in this Online Extra. This project appeared in ShopNotes Issue 100.

Box, Router Bit Using scrap pieces of 3/4 inch plywood to make a storage/protective case for 12 of my most often used router bits was definitely a challenge - not so much in the making of the box, but in calculating accurately the interior dimensions of the box without the bits binding on the top when the lid was closed.

Box, Router Bit Now that I am collecting new router bits, the drawer which I used to keep them in ran out of room, so I thought I had build one. Remember that your router bits need to be stored safely as they cost a lot of money and you do not want to damage them. If you have not got any storage for them then this project is ideal for you.

Depth stops for a hand held router When using a router, you want to avoid taking too deep a cut. It can create excess chipout and, in some situations, can be dangerous. So when I want to rout a dado or groove that is more than a 1/4 inch deep, I take multiple passes.

Dovetail Jig Workcenter (PDF) The dovetail jig gets a lot of use in my shop. But there are a few things that can be an inconvenience when using it. My biggest complaint is that I have to stoop over to see what I am doing as I work. Another problem is keeping the workpieces clamped square. And finally, when Iam done for the day, I have to find a place to store the jig and accessories. This handy workcenter solves all these problems. The cutting diagrams and materials list are available to download in this Online Extra.
