Air Filter for Workshop Computer zAfter getting a new shop computer, all was happy until the computer case fans started to whine and make way too much noise. Popping the side off the case revealed about half a pound of dust bunnies and that the fans had a thick coat of crud on them. Given that the computer is used in an office attached to an industrial shop, a better solution was needed.

Air Filter, Downdraft Sanding Table zThe fact that the blower is hidden deep inside the table makes it very quiet. I can leave it running all the time and it does not bother me at all. The slopes provide a very good suction even in the corners of the table. I tried sanding a board in the 4 corners and the sawdust was sucked down right away. So it does its job as a downdraft table. It also does a very good job as an air filter. The fact that it picks up the dust from the top and expel the air along the floor, creates a circular flow in the workshop and clears the air quickly. In fact, after a couple days of using it as an air filter, the filters were already full of dust.

Downdraft Sanding Table zI could never justify spending $800 to $2000 on something that didn't add another capability to my shop, but once I figured out a way to build one for a much lower cost, I realized it is worth whatever it costs.

Drill Press Table and fence system (PDF) zWhen I turn to the drill press, it's because I need precisely placed and perfectly straight holes. But the standard, cast iron table won't support anything but the smallest workpiece. Then, trying to clamp a workpiece in place can be a frustrating exercise. And you can forget about dust collection. The table and fence system in ShopNotes No. 94 solves all these problems. It turns your drill press into a precision woodworking tool. The cutting diagrams and materials list are available to download in this Online Extra.

Drum Sander Vacuum Table zMounting a drum sander on a drill press is a great way to sand the edge of a curved workpiece. But it produces very fine sawdust that's unhealthy to breathe -- and a nuisance. So to cut down on the sawdust, I built an auxiliary drum sander table that works with my shop vacuum.

Dust bag for Mitersaws, MEGA zCollecting sawdust from some mitersaws is about as efficient as catching a thunderstorm in a shot glass. But the big ol' bag?dust catcher that I built for my mitersaw collects about 90 percent of the debris.

Dust Collection Cyclone zThe purpose of this site is to share what I have learned with other woodworkers about the hazards of wood dust and what I did to help protect myself and my family. This particular page steps you through the process I used to build a blower. A blower is a powerful high-speed device that if you build wrong could cause serious injury or damage.
