Bed, Headboard for a Enhance your horizontal hours with a handmade headboard! Building a headboard is really easy, costs a fraction of what a store-bought headboard costs, and you can have it in any colour because you are the master designer here. And the head painter. And the head sleeper. So you can add any built-in option you want, including cupholders, reading lamps, speakers and a hands-free phone. Courtesy of Mag Ruffman

Bed, Headboards As a key feature in a bedroom, the headboard helps set the decorative tone. If you think of a headboard as a picture frame--it can even be a real picture frame if you wish -- you'll get a sense of how easy it is to change a bedroom's look. The three examples shown here demonstrate the range of possibilities.

Headboard of Roses This design reduces roses to their bare, basic petals, which when stained in a dark colour look stunning against a pale wall. Even if you don't consider yourself an artist, the supplied pattern allows you to create this stunning piece to sit at the head of your bed.

Headboard Pattern - King Size (PDF) To modify this headboard for a king-size bed, I stretched the design so it is wider (and the curve slightly taller) than the queen-size version. But before you start, it is a good idea to measure your bedframe to make sure it will line up with the posts. The patterns are available to download in this Online Extra.

Headboard Pattern - Queen size (PDF) One of the challenges of the Arch-Top Headboard is laying out a large, symmetrical curve and having it look just right. The easiest way to do this is to draw a half-pattern on paper first. The half-pattern makes getting a symmetrical finished piece automatic. The dimensions given for the Arch-Top Headboard are for a queen-size bed. The patterns are available to download in this Online Extra.

Headboard, Arched Top (PDF) t I really get excited about is how it's built. Even though the headboard looks traditional, it's not your typical case construction. No mortise and tenon joints to cut. No dovetails to rout. Just some rabbets, a few grooves and splines, and three solid-wood panels. Even the assembly of the frame and posts is done in small steps. The cutting diagrams and materials list are available to download in this Online Extra."

Headboard, Upholstered One of the easiest and most versatile ways to build a headboard is to use an upholstered design. Making a headboard means you can use it for any bed size you choose. Inexpensive to build, they can be put together in a weekend. Upholstered headboards can be covered with any type of fabric or leather to match your decor.

Make your own Headboard An upholstered headboard turns a ho-hum bed into a properly padded comfort zone. Just pad a piece of plywood with foam, cover with the upholstery-grade fabric of your choice, and bolt the finished headboard to an ordinary metal bed frame.
